Wonderful Mother's Day Weekend

Friday night we drove down to the cabin in Fairview for a little Mother's Day weekend. My mom was nice enough to get all the kids' beds ready since we got there after bedtime. When I went into the room that she had the Pack-n-Play set up, I noticed a funny smell. We thought that maybe a mouse had peed on the bedding or something, so I moved Elliot out of that room and into the room with Guy and I and we figured that we would take care of it in the morning.

Saturday morning came and we started off with a wonderful breakfast of French Toast, cinnamon syrup, burnt hashbrowns (thanks to me), and bacon. Yum! After we all took a quick shower (showers go really quick when there is no hot water), we ran to Moroni to the turkey plant. That is one of our favorite traditions. Then off to the grocery store for fixin's for dinner that night, breakfast for Mother's Day, and whatever I would need to take to Sterling on Sunday for lunch. Once we got back to the cabin, we decided that it would be much more fun to play outside than go to the laundromat and wash bedding so we just forgot about the smell in the one bedroom. Saturday night we had a great dinner of Tri-Tip steak and carne asada, roasted potatoes, salad, rolls and a yummy pie for dessert.

Sunday morning, Tamara and I made waffles with strawberries, buttermilk syrup, hashbrowns (not burnt), and more bacon. Yummy again! After breakfast, it was time to change sheets on the beds, pack up and go to Sterling. My mom came upstairs to ask if I wanted any help changing the sheets. I was just about done with the bed I was working on so I asked her to go to the room where the girls slept and start in there. She had to go into the smelly room to find clean sheets and she found a lot more than that. We all heard her scream as she discovered the reason for the smell. A dead, decaying, maggot filled mouse on top of the clean sheets. Nothing says "I love you" like maggots on Mother's Day. We made the boys clean up the ickiest parts of that one.

We got to Sterling at about 2:00. After a nice visit and lunch, it was time to head back home. We didn't get home until about 10:00 that night and we still had to change all the kids into pajamas. Of course, they all fell asleep on the ride home, so we had to wake them up just enough to change and go potty and then put them to bed. What an adventuresome weekend.

A litte crack at sewing

My good friend Lara came over one day to use my surger to surge the seams on a nightgown that she had made for her daughter. She told me just how easy it was so I thought I would take a shot at it. I went to the fabric store to try and find a pattern that I liked, and nothing really jumped out at me. A nice lady (from Genola) was sitting across the table from me and we struck up a little conversation. I told her what kind of nightgown I was looking for and she said that she had a ton of patterns at home and was sure that one of them would fit my description. So I gave her my name, address and phone number and she said that she would mail me a pattern. I would then trace the pattern pieces and mail it back to her. How nice is that? A little surprise came a few days later when there was a knock at my door and there was the lady from the fabric store. She had traced all the pattern pieces (2 sizes for both my girls) and copied all the instructions for me and delivered them to my house. I just love the kindness of strangers.

Well, I finally got around to sewing these nightgowns. I had a free Saturday so I headed to my Mom's house for a little sewing lesson. We had a ton of interruptions from the little ones so it took us forever to sew just one nightgown. Ashley was so excited to wear it and I think that she would have worn it all the next day if we didn't have to get dressed for church. The following week, I worked on sewing Amelia's nightgown during Elliot's naps. It took a couple of days but I got it done. The girls love wearing their nightgowns. Now I want to work on making summer nightgowns for them.
